Naturally weathered piece of wood

Artefact is an exploration investigating fragments of nature, through the materiality of weathered pieces of wood. The wooden form was retrieved from the forest, where over many years it had been exposed to the elements, resulting in a process of decay. This process of decomposition resulted in a variety of intricate formal qualities: holes, lines, voids, shapes and textures, which once cleaned were captivating.

The wood inherently valueless is presented as a museum artefact, elegantly displayed mirror polished metal prongs attached to a black base. The wooden piece, elevated above the floor is decontextualised from its natural environment, this subversion creates an emphasis of the wood, assigning it with a value — visually. The stand highlights the wood's formality and material qualities by delicately resting a-top a subtle and elegant stand, that creates distance and space around the piece to elicit respect.
