Evolution is a part of Keenan's exploration into charcoal, delving into the medium's poignant nature and its deep and enduring connection to human beings. Historically, charcoal has been used as a mark-making material. This work involves the viewer in an inimitable experience, by inviting viewers to manipulate the charcoal across the floor with their feet.

Utilising the floor as a canvas, the work becomes an account of each viewer's presence, interaction, movements & experience within the space. Every iteration of this work is a unique reflection of a moment in time, similar to sitting around a campfire. Once the fire is extinguished, only the remnants remain, offering clues as to the events that took place. Similarly, Evolution achieves this sense of time and trace through the marks left by the viewers using their feet to crunch, crack, and drag the charcoal across the floor. The simple interactive experience ignites the present moment; what's left behind is therefore a recollection of what once was. The work is located on the floor, referencing the presence of an extinguished campfire.
