Plinths

Plinth's play a vital role within art, they're a tool for presenting artworks. This is an exploration into utility and formality of plinths as both a tool for presentation and an artwork in of itself, delving into how the materiality, formality and associations surrounding the plinth impact perceptions through three separate investigations.

Plinth that appears to be crushed and cracking

Untitled (Plinth I) is a white plinth on the bottom half, and a clay cube which was then squished to appear as if it were deformed. Aiming to explore the associations surrounding a plinths structure, strength and rigidity.

Untitled (Plinth II), strips the plinth back to its bare material properties, deconstructing the side panels and turning these limited materials into a dynamic form, that distanced itself from the rigid square form of the plinth. Panels were cut into trapezoid shapes and then arranged into a circular, layered form.

Trials into untraditional materials in Untitled (Plinth III) was constructed from a computer motherboard made transformed into a plinth. The components became the artwork, and the circuit board acted as the plinth, creating a shift in focus from the formality of the plinth entirely
